Pontefract Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Pontefract is one of the best appointed race courses of its kind in the country. There are modern bars and refreshment areas in all enclosures. The racing programme has been greatly improved in recent years.

The motorway links provide good communications not only with local training centres but also with other major training centres in the country, notably Newmarket, with the result that the racing is both competitive and entertaining.

Closed circuit television is in operation on every race day, with televisions in all bars and refreshment areas.

There are modern Tote facilities and kiosks throughout the stands. There is an off-course betting office in the paddock and second enclosure.

Notable Races
The Silver Tankard Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in the United Kingdom for two-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 4 yards (1,613 metres) at Pontefract Racecourse in October. High class horses to have contested the race include Swallow Flight (second in 1998), Bandari (winner by nine lengths in 2001) and Maraahel (fourth in 2003).

But perhaps the most notable runner of recent years is the 2004 winner "Comic Strip". Later in his career he was exported to be trained in Hong Kong, where he was re-named Viva Pataca, and became a multiple winner of Group 1 races.

Left-handed, undulating 2m circuit, with straight of just over 2f. Last 6f essentially uphill.
